Stijn Celis

Stijn Celis Staatstheater Saarbrucken500pxChoreographer and stage designer Stijn Celis was born in 1964. He grew up in Zaire and moved to Belgium in 1972. He studied dance at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp before joining the Royal Ballet of Flanders where he spent two seasons. In 1986 he joined Zurich Ballet under the direction of Uwe Scholz. During this time he also spent one year in the Ballet des Stadttheaters in Bern. In 1992 he became a member of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève where he created his first work "Airpockets"
Since 1997 Stijn Celis has devoted himself to choreography and stage design. His works have been performed by the Gulbenkian Ballet, Mainz Ballet, Wiesbaden Ballet, Nuremberg Ballet and the Cullberg Ballet. In 2002 the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal commissioned him to create "Noces" with well known music by Stravinsky. In 2003 the GBCM called on his talents again to create the ballet Cinderella – "She who, it is said, lost her slipper".
It was while he was at the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, under the artistic direction of Gradimir Pankov, that Stijn Celis showed his talents as a choreographer during a dance workshop.
As a stage designer he has worked with Didy Veldman and Nicole Fonte and has assisted Jan Verzweyveld with many operas and plays.
In 2001 Stijn Celis was described as one of the most promising young choreographers of the year in the journal Ballet International / Tanz Aktuell in Berlin.
In 2004 Stijn Celis was appointed Artistic Director of the Ballet des Stadttheaters Bern. He is also their Principal Choreographer.
