Thierry Malandain

Thierry-Malandain2Thierry Malandain followed the usual path of a classical dancer but with a strong leaning towards the unconventional and a remarkable persistence. Instead of undertaking training in recognised well known institutions, he followed the teachings of Jacques Chaurand, Monique de Dily, René Bon, Daniel Franck, Gilbert Mayer and Raymond Franchetti. All of them are eminent and engaging teachers with strong and colourful personalities...
Having won several choreographic competitions (Prix violin in 1984, Prix Concours International de Nyon in 1984 and 1985) he stopped dancing in 1986 in order to set up the Compagnie Temps Présent in Elancourt (Yveslines, France). Here he contributed to the development of dance in the suburbs while still declaring his commitment to the vocabulary of classical dance. His company subsequently moved to Saint-Etienne (France) as the "Associate Company" of the Esplanade Saint Etienne Opéra. During his twelve years at the head of this company Thierry won many important prizes: from the Fondation de la Vocation, the Fondation de France, the Fondation Oulmont and the "Rising Talent" prize from the SACD.
In 1998 a new Centre Choréographique National / Ballet Biarritz was created and the Minister of Culture, Mme Catherine Trautmann, appointed Thierry to set it up and direct it .
Thierry Malandain's body of work includes some 70 pieces many of which are included in the repertoires of other companies: Ballet National de Marseille, Ballet de l'Opéra de Bordeaux, Latvian National Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Academy for Performing Arts in Hong Kong, Sadamatsu Hamada Ballet Company, Florida Ballet, Ballet Junior de Genève, Ballet national de Nancy, Ballet de L'Opéra d'Avignon...etc...
He has also made notable forays into the world of operatic theatre, such as his collaboration with Robert Fortune (Cinderella, Orpheus in the Underworld), Peter Busse (Capriccio), Alberto Fassini (Aida), Jean-Louis Pichon (Richard Coeur de Lion, Hérodiade), Frédéric Pineau (La Poule Noire) or even Orphée et Eurydice which he choreographed and directed in 2006.

He was made a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters in 1999. In 2004 he was nominated at the prestigious Benois de la Danse in Moscow for his ballet "Les Créatures" and he won the Critics Prize at the International Ballet Festival of Havana, Cuba. In 2005 he was awarded the Culture Prize by the Fondation Sabina Arena in Bilbao. In 2006 he was once again nominated at the Benois de la Danse in Moscow for "L'Envoi d'Icare" which he had created for the Paris Opera Ballet. Finally having been the Artistic Director of Le Temps d'Aimer dance festival in Biarritz from 2000 to 2004, he has returned to lead this event since 2009.
